Arthur Murray History

There are over 260 Arthur Murray Dance Studios in the world spread across 21 countries!

We’ve been in the business of creating fulfilled, social dancers for over 100 years. Our longevity is a result of quality customer service, unparalleled social dance instruction techniques, and experienced corporate management that carries on the tradition of excellence started by Arthur himself in 1912.

Arthur Murray contracted the dancing bug in 1909. He was just a self-conscious, lanky kid who learned a couple dance steps from a friend when he continued to practice his skills at local neighborhood weddings. From that point on, he wanted to spread the joy of dancing. He started a mail-order business to help teach people how to dance—showing them that anyone can do it. Even after  two World Wars and the Great Depression, Arthur then expanded to his dancing business to a franchise.

As he gained more and more popularity, Arthur became a sort of beacon, bringing dance to those who thought they couldn’t do it. From 1950 to 1960, he even had his own television show. The Arthur Murray Party aired every major television network and featured musical guests and celebrities. It was inspired by the practice parties at Arthur Murray dance studios—a tradition we still hold in our locations today!

There’s no doubt that Arthur is a great inspiration, and we are proud to carry on his legacy in New Jersey and across the 260 total Arthur Murray studios worldwide. We’re sure he is dancing in his grave knowing that he has brought the gift of dance to all corners of the world.

Arthur’s story is a testament to our teachings in at Arthur Murray New Jersey—that anyone can dance.
