We all find ourselves pushed to the max sometimes with packed calendars, to-do lists, appointments, errands, meetings, etc… Sometimes, no, oftentimes we schedule very little time for self care. But how can you offer the best of yourself to others if you don’t take the necessary time to invest in making yourself better? We’ve found that the dance lifestyle we live has benefits far beyond the dance floor.

You can start living your best life with these simple but effective dance lifestyle changes.

Practicing Self Awareness

Self awareness is a fairly easy thing in theory, but something we definitely take for granted. You are not just a robot destined to fulfill its duties and shut down to recharge just to do it all over again tomorrow. You (yes you!) are an amazing complicated gift to the world. It’s time to own your body, mind, and soul to discover just how truly remarkable and capable you are. Start by understanding your body: how it moves, how each piece functions together to make movement, breathing each breath fully. Understand your mindset: are you frustrated, sad, joyful, discouraged, excited, content? Take time to identify your feelings, own them, and ask yourself why you’re feeling that way. Mindfulness helps you focus on the present, when so often we’re focused on either the past or what’s to come.

Facing Your Fears

Dance lifestyle 2Stop living in fear! Seriously, just stop. Statistically, your worst fears will never happen and most people regret things they didn’t do more than the things they did do. So take time to invest in yourself. Sign up for those dance classes, ask that cute coworker for their number, tell your boss you think you deserve a promotion, volunteer to travel to another country with a non-profit. You only have one life to live, it’s time to get out there and live it and stop letting self-doubt win.

Setting Goals

Once you’ve told your fears to kick rocks, it’s time to set attainable goals as well as lofty ones. Why both? Because setting goals that are seemingly far fetched is an excellent way to challenge yourself to be brave and try to push harder than you think you can go. Also, setting goals you know you’ll accomplish gives your confidence a boost as you turn that to-do list into a ta-da list.

Developing New Skills

You are much more capable than you realize. As you face your fears and set goals, not only are you developing new emotional and psychological strengths, you will also discover new ways to shine. Whether it is exercise, dancing, singing, playing a musical instrument, teaching, learning a foreign language... you are building life skills that transcend a variety of situations. You’re becoming more socially savvy, you’re building muscle and flexibility, you’re practicing calm breathing techniques, or you’re honing your short and long term memory (hey - we like big brains and we cannot lie!).

Dance lessons are so much more than just learning how to do something new - it’s a lifestyle change that brings so many more benefits to your daily existence. Bottom line, you’re improving yourself which is a worthy investment.
